DRAG ARTISTS
I’ve always been a fan of drag and gender-bending art. As a teenager, I watched The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994) and To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar (1995) on repeat.
When I was in college, friends introduced me to the Takarazuka Revue, Japan’s premier all-female musical theatre company. I actually became the treasurer of The Chapman Takarazuka Society, the only Takarazuka club outside of Asia. We even got to go on a backstage tour of the Takarazuka Grand Theatre, which was a very rare honor.
Cut to now: I’m deep into the Drag Race cinematic universe, and I’m also exploring the imaginative and limitless world of drag as an artform. Drag artists, and any artists who transform themselves through makeup, are so rewarding to draw. What I always hope to not only capture the artistry of their makeup, but to honor the beautiful features of the person underneath.
